How to make your DIY Owl Costume

In two easy steps you can create your own owl costume. In the first step you design your feather-outfit. In the second step you handicraft your owl mask or you paint an owl-like face with make-up onto your own face. Let´s get started!

This is how you sew your owl costume

Get yourself the basic material needed:

  • shirt or dress
  • fabric remnants
  • needle and thread

Firstly, you create your feather-outfit for this costume. Take the fabric remnants and cut out slim triangle shapes. You choose the amount of triangles you would like to attach to your shirt or dress. Line up the triangles and sew them together as if creating a garland. Then attach them to your shirt/dress. To make your feather-look realistic keep the spaces between the garlands as small as possible.

How to handicraft your owl mask

Items needed:

  • eye mask or paper (thin carboard)
  • acrylic paint
  • yellow sponge rubber or felt
  • feathers
  • glue gun

Firstly, take the eye mask and the thin cardboard to cut out an eye mask. Now use the acrylic paint and colour it as you like. Use light paint around the eyes. Afterwards, glue the feathers to the mask with the glue gun. Use the yellow sponge rubber or felt and cut out a small triangle to form the beak. Glue it onto the mask with the glue gun as well.

Makeup tutorial

As an alternative or additionally to your mask, you can easily apply makeup to create the perfect owl-look: Use soft face paint sticks. Apply light makeup up to your eyebrows and fill in the space. Use dark colours to create short lines to imitate feathers. These fake feathers especially have a great effect on your cheeks and above your eyebrows. Use yellow face paint to apply a triangle onto your nose. This will be the beak of the owl.
